Mardi Gras is Just Around the Corner

Monday January 7, 2008

Yes, I know. You've barely finished stowing the holiday decorations. Still, if you're thinking of traveling for Mardi Gras / Carnival, it's time to make some plans. You might even be able to take advantage of the January airfare sales if you act quickly.

Mardi Gras is celebrated just before the beginning of Lent. This year, Ash Wednesday falls on February 6. This means that some celebrations will get underway by the end of this month.

While many Americans associate Mardi Gras with New Orleans, this days-long party event takes place around the world. In Brazil, Rio de Janeiro's famous Samba Parade draws visitors and locals alike. Germany's Fasching celebration lasts for several days, culminating on Rosen Montag (Rose Monday, two days before Ash Wednesday). In Italy, Carnevale is a day for children to dress in costume and parade around their home towns, pelting each other with confetti. Venice's Carnevale is known for its elaborate costume balls and exquisite carnival masks.

Mardi Gras isn't just a time to party. If you're traveling, participating in a traditional festival can be a great way to meet people and immerse yourself in the local culture.
