Should You Rent a Car in Europe?

Monday January 21, 2008

Temperatures have fallen where I live, so I am dreaming of travel to warm places. Spain, in particular, has been on my mind. I'd love to rent a car and roam the Spanish countryside, visiting bodegas, checking out art museums and sampling tapas.

I've rented cars in several countries, even in Ireland, where you drive on the left side of the road. I must admit, using a stick shift when you're sitting in the right-hand seat feels very, very strange, but I managed. I like renting cars because I enjoy getting away from the city and exploring small towns.

Of course, there are times when a rental car is more trouble than it's worth. You'll need to brush up on your manual transmission driving skills if you want to rent a small, inexpensive car. Secure parking is quite expensive in many European cities. And let's not even talk about the high cost of gasoline.

If you're considering renting a car in Europe, there are many factors to consider. Take some time to think about your ground transportation options.
