Plan an Outdoor Adventure With Your Grandchildren

When you make summer travel plans, why not include your grandchildren?

Lois Friedland, About.com's Guide to Adventure Travel, sent me some information about the REI Kids Passport to Adventure, which would be a great addition to a vacation with grandkids. Children can document their outdoor activities in a journal, which includes a postcard that they can send in to REI for a prize.

Want to leave the travel plans to someone else? Take your grandchildren on a tour especially designed for grandparents and grandkids. Rascals in Paradise and Grandtravel specialize in planning this type of trip.

If you enjoy an outdoor hobby, consider passing it along to a grandchild as part of a travel experience. Children love watching wildlife, taking pictures and experiencing the outdoors first-hand. What better way to learn about our amazing planet than by experiencing it with a grandparent?

What great ideas! I particularly like the suggestion for having your grandkids keep a journal. I’m all about documenting your family time. It’s something that future generations will enjoy and appreciate.

Kids just love to get outside. That’s one of the reasons Scouting and 4-H are so successful. You don’t have to climb Mt. Everest to enjoy outdoor fun with children. Grab a couple of disposable cameras, head to your local nature trail or park, and the rest is easy.

Elderhostel also offers intergenerational tours. Perfect for grandparents traveling with grandchildren. I also love the idea of the journal. They won’t realize it now, but that journal will become a treasured keepsake for them when they are older.

Debbie, you’re right – I wrote about Elderhostel and other grandparent / grandchild trips here.
