This is Only a Test - United Airlines to Charge for Business Class Meals
In theory, it's a test, at least according to United Airlines' press release discussing changes to coach and business class meals. Beginning October 1, business class passengers will no longer be offered hot meals, but will instead receive the same "Buy on Board" meals sold in coach. Business class passengers will not be charged for their meals.
As part of this test, transatlantic coach passengers flying to or from Dulles International Airport will no longer receive free meals, but will be offered "Buy on Board" meals instead.
The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that United will also raise the prices on its Buy on Board selections. "Fresh items" will cost $9 - up from $7 - while "shelf-stable" selections will cost $6.
I've grown accustomed to inhaling food during layovers and to packing my own meals for longer flights, but I fly in grunge class. Somehow I don't think this "test" will receive a passing grade from United's business class passengers.
