As Hurricane Gustav bore down on Louisiana, I found myself wondering what I would have done had I booked a flight to New Orleans or a Mississippi River cruise. I'm a great believer in protecting my investments, and I, personally, have been known to take out travel insurance, but I didn't know how trip cancellation policies work when hurricanes are headed toward shore. I decided to take a closer look at weather-related trip cancellation insurance, and the results were quite interesting.

Can you insure your trip against weather delays? Yes, but you can't do so once a tropical storm has been named. You'll have to plan ahead if you want to insure your trip.
