GPS Receivers - Useful Travel Tool or Trendy Gadget?
I'm a map gal and always have been. I love planning driving trips, spreading maps out on the table and tracing different routes. I've been slow to come around to the idea of letting a GPS receiver tell me where to go.
After my parents' recent trip to Ireland, however, I'm sold. Dad sent emails describing how useful his in-car GPS was on Irish back roads. He said he was able to concentrate on staying on the left side of the road and let the GPS direct him. Mom appreciated not having to wrestle bulky maps with tiny print in an unfamiliar place. (I've lived in Ireland and I know just how easy it is to make a wrong turn.) I knew, too, that if either of my parents became ill, the GPS unit would tell them how to find the nearest hospital. I was surprised at how reassured I was by this knowledge.
If your own travel plans include a road trip, give some thought to buying or renting a GPS receiver. Although they do have some drawbacks, GPS receivers can help you stay safe, save time and find help when you're on the road.

As a solo traveler I think GPS units are great. Even if I mess up there is a sweet girl GPS voice telling me a new route. The majority of the time I do not know where I am at in a large city. I just let my GPS direct me to a location. I feel confident traveling anywhere with it.
