The National World War II Museum Opens New Complex November 6

Wednesday October 28, 2009

On November 6, 2009, The National World War II Museum in New Orleans will celebrate the grand opening of its new complex, which includes The Solomon Victory Theater, The Stage Door Canteen and a new restaurant, The American Sector. Grand Opening events will last throughout the weekend, with a free Family Fun day and Victory Stomp celebration on Saturday and a Stephen E. Ambrose Retrospective and a lecture by Dr. Alan Brinkley on Sunday. (Tickets are required for the Victory Stomp.)

The Solomon Victory Theater will play host to Beyond All Boundaries, a multisensory experience that goes beyond mere film to bring the World War II experience to life. Each weekend, The Stage Door Canteen will present live performances commemorating the music and dance of the World War II era.

The National World War II Museum, founded by historian and writer Stephen E. Ambrose, is the only museum in the U.S. dedicated to telling the complete story of World War II at home and on the front lines. The new complex is part of a planned $300 million expansion which will eventually include four new exhibit pavilions.

I realize this post is not exactly wordless, but I am glad that the museum is expanding and wanted to share the details with you. The National World War II Museum showcases the wartime experience for young and old alike and brings jobs and revenue to New Orleans while fulfilling this mission. No matter how old you are or how much you know about World War II, you'll learn something new during your visit to The National World War II Museum.

It sounds like the museum will be sharing lots of important lessons with visitors. We must learn from history, after all, or we’re doomed to repeat it.

Definitely on my list of places to visit. My Grandfather and all his brothers served in some capacity in WWII and it has always been of interest to me because of their stories. My Grandfather has said many times that is was the time in his life when he felt the most purposeful and the most useful.

My husband has visited the museum multiple times, and I’ve been once. It is indeed an excellent museum, great for history buffs but interesting to everyone.

I am glad they are telling the story…it is one that really needs to be known. Having done extensive research on Hitler and his rise, though, it fills me with too much sadness to want to go.

I wish this had been open when we visited New Orleans ten years ago! My husband is a WW II buff and teaches a class on Holocaust literature. He’d love this!

Being a fan of ancient history doesn’t mean I like modern history (not one little bit), but that museum does sound interesting, especially the musical stuff that will be familiar from WWII movies.

I’d like not to see war glorified by any means. This seems almost to make it world war an era of excitement rather than the duress and sacrifice so many endured. The true story of war is one of horror and suffering.
