Yesterday, Amtrak began train service between Washington, DC, and Norfolk, Virginia, enabling same-day rail travel from Norfolk to Washington, DC, and back.
The schedule is set up so that someone in Norfolk can board an early morning train, get to Washington in the mid-morning and be home again that night. The Saturday schedule allows travelers to arrive in the District by 11:00 a. m., sightsee until early evening and be back in Norfolk before midnight.
Previously, to access Amtrak service from Norfolk, you had to take a bus to Newport News' train station.
To celebrate the new route, Amtrak is offering $19 one-way fares between Norfolk and Washington, DC. You must book your trip by December 17; all travel must be completed by December 30, 2012.
Once the sale is over, you can still save on Amtrak if you are 62 or older; on most trains, Amtrak offers seniors a 15% discount on the lowest available fare. Restrictions apply.
