According to The Christian Science Monitor and other news outlets, Southwest Airlines plans to increase certain checked bag and Early Bird Check-In fees and add a new no-show fee for passengers who buy inexpensive "Wanna Get Away" fares and then fail to turn up for their flights.
Southwest passengers will still be able to check two bags for free, but a third checked bag will cost $75 (up from $50), and oversize and overweight checked bags will also cost $75. Fees to check sports equipment and large media camera bags will also increase. Early Bird Check-In fees will go up $2.50 per flight. According to Southwest's website, the new fees apply to tickets purchased on or after December 15 (which has already passed, of course) for flights departing on February 13, 2013 or later.
Southwest also plans to introduce a new no-show fee. Passengers holding inexpensive "Wanna Get Away" tickets will incur this fee if they fail to show for their scheduled flight. As of this writing, Southwest has not announced the amount of this new fee or the date it will take effect.
