Like many travelers, I use my ATM card to obtain foreign currency when I'm overseas. I also use my ATM card to pay for gas and groceries when I'm on vacation in the US.

I'm very careful with my ATM card and my credit cards when I travel. I carry my cards and cash in a money belt, and I take steps to avoid becoming the victim of ATM fraud.

There are several ways criminals can obtain your bank account information from your ATM card, but you can protect yourself from ATM fraud without too much trouble. We've put together some tips for avoiding ATM fraud; use them at home and on the road to safeguard your card and your cash.

An alternative to using your credit or debit card when travelling abroad is to use a prepaid currency card instead. This type of card can be used to make withdrawals from ATM machines and used in shops, restaurants and other places such as gas stations. A currency card is not linked to your bank account, you simply load money onto it via telephone or online. There is therefore no threat of falling victim to bank account fraud.

It is important to be always aware of your surrounding when you are in foreign country. Inform you banks before going overseas and know all the details and rules regarding the use of debit and credit cards there. This will help you manage and act quickly in terms of any fraud and currency problems.
