This golden bust of Charlemagne was created in 1349 A. D. It contains the skull of Charlemagne, the first Holy Roman Emperor.
You can see the bust of Charlemagne and many other medieval treasures at Aachen Cathedral in Germany, Charlemagne's own church. Charlemagne had the central octagonal chapel consecrated as his official church in 805 A. D., and the church was expanded in the early 1400s. Aachen Cathedral was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978.
