Budget Williamsburg - Budget Williamsburg for Senior Travelers
Visit Williamsburg on a Budget

From Kate Silver, for About.com

(LifeWire) - Williamsburg, Va., is home to the world's largest living history museum. Located about halfway between Richmond and Norfolk, Va., Williamsburg brims with museums and historical exhibits -- plus an array of outlet malls for bargain hunters. With plenty of budget hotels and a variety of affordable restaurants, it's not difficult to stretch your dollar in Williamsburg.

Getting There

Williamsburg is served by three airports: Richmond International Airport and Norfolk International Airport are both about 45 miles outside of town, while Newport News/Williamsburg Airport is 14 miles away. Buses and Amtrak trains arrive at Williamsburg's Transportation Center.

Where to Stay

Many affordable hotels are located just a few minutes from the Colonial Williamsburg Historic Area, such as the Comfort Inn Historic Area, Days Inn Colonial Resort and Country Inn & Suites. Also look into the Historic Powhatan Resort and Westgate Historic Williamsburg.

Dining Options

Don't miss Virginia's Southern flair for food at locals' choices like Pierce's Pitt Bar-B-Que and the Old Chickahominy House. Various national chains like IHOP, Cracker Barrel, Red Lobster, Ruby Tuesday and the standard fast food chains also have a presence in Williamsburg.

Getting Around

To avoid heavy traffic, the local bus system, Williamsburg Area Transport, is the best option. Fare is $1.25 one way, and seniors 60 and older (and/or disabled people with a Medicare card) ride for 50 cents. Call (757) 259-4093 to learn more about the specialized service offered for disabled people. Yellow Cab and Williamsburg Taxi are the local cab services.

Senior-Friendly Attractions

Colonial Williamsburg is the must-see historic area; it has been restored so that visitors can experience life as it was in the 1700s. Horse-drawn carriages, powdered wigs, long dresses and colonial fare are de rigueur. Those with disabilities can receive discounted admission. Because of its old-world nature, not all parts of Colonial Williamsburg are wheelchair accessible. Consult the Colonial Williamsburg website for details.

Other nearby historic sites to see include Yorktown Victory Center, Jamestown Settlement and President's Park.

Shoppers will enjoy a bevy of options in Williamsburg, including Prime Outlets Williamsburg, The Williamsburg Outlet Mall, Williamsburg Antique Mall and Williamsburg Pottery Factory.

Events and Festivals

In February, Williamsburg celebrates Black History Month, emphasizing the struggles of African Americans during the American Revolution. Also in February is Presidents Day Weekend, when historical events and figures like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison are recreated in spectacular fashion. Women's History Month in March highlights the contributions of 18th-century women. Other dates of note: Religion Month in April, Memorial Day, the Flag Day Naturalization Ceremony in June, Independence Day and Veterans Day.
