J. M. Davis Arms and Historical Museum features one of the most eclectic collections of firearms and other items in the US, probably because the bulk of the museum's holdings were acquired by one man, John Monroe Davis. Davis began collecting and trading guns when he was very young and never stopped. As an adult, he expanded his collection to anything that interested him - music boxes, hangman's nooses, samurai swords and more.
Davis bought a hotel in Claremore, Oklahoma in 1916, and soon began filling hotel rooms and even the ballroom with his guns and other collectibles. Through the J. M. Davis Foundation, Inc., he leased his entire collection to the state of Oklahoma for 99 years. In return, the state built the J. M. Davis Arms and Historical Museum building. The museum opened to the public in 1969.
