What Should I Ask When I Telephone the Innkeeper?

When you call the innkeeper, you may wish to discuss some or all of these topics:

  • Reservation and payment procedures. Does the B&B accept credit card payments? Do you pay for your room when you reserve it, or when you check in?
  • Cancellation policy. If you need to change your travel plans, will you get your money back?
  • Communications, special services and amenities. Many B&Bs don’t have TVs or telephones in guests’ rooms. If you need telephone access, ask if your cell phone will work at the B&B. Find out if Internet access is available. Some B&Bs feature relaxing extras, such as a sitting room with a fireplace or a massage chair, to make your stay as comfortable as possible.
  • Discounts and packages. Many B&Bs offer special weekend packages or discounts. Ask about senior discounts – some proprietors do offer occasional price breaks, but don’t advertise them on their websites. If you’re active duty or retired military, ask about servicemember discounts.
  • Breakfast. If you are on a special diet or are vegetarian, it’s best to ask about your breakfast options before you book your room.
  • Children. Some B&B’s don’t allow children, while others cater to them. If you’re planning a romantic getaway, you might want to ask the owner about his / her child policy.
  • Bedroom and bathroom facilities. B&Bs offer an incredible variety of guest rooms. The owner will be happy to tell you about bed sizes, tubs, showers and staircases. Be sure to ask about bathroom facilities; while many B&Bs have private bathrooms for each guest room, some only offer shared bathrooms.
  • Accessibility. Historic homes and old farmhouses may or may not be wheelchair accessible. If you use a wheelchair, be sure to ask about doorway widths, wheelchair lifts and bathroom dimensions, even if the owner tells you the B&B is accessible.
  • Rules. Because each B&B is privately owned, “house rules” differ. Ask about check-in times, smoking policies and anything else you feel would make your stay more comfortable.
  • Owner’s family and pets. If you’re bothered by allergies, ask about pets on the property. You may also wish to ask whether the owner lives on the premises.

What Should I Do During My Stay?

If you don’t have a pre-planned itinerary, ask the owner of your B&B about local attractions, walking paths, restaurants or anything else you’d like to do. You’ll also be welcome to relax with a book in your room, in the sitting area or on the porch. Don’t forget to leave a comment in the B&B’s guestbook when you leave.
