While Fisherman's Wharf may have seen better days, San Francisco still has a personality all its own. If you study up on California history before you visit, you'll truly appreciate the convergence of cultures and lifestyles here. Riding cable cars may be touristy, but where else can you do it? The recently revamped California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park features an aquarium, natural history museum, rainforest and even a planetarium - all under an eco-friendly "living roof" - definitely a must-see. Escape to the redwoods or wine country if you neeed a break from San Francisco's steeply-pitched streets.
Tip: Never, ever call San Francisco "Frisco". Trust me.
