Octagonal Chapel and Barbarossa Chandelier

The heart of Aachen Cathedral is the octagonal chapel commissioned by Charlemagne. Pope Leo III consecrated the chapel in 805 A.D.

Emperor Frederick Barbarossa gave the church a bronze chandelier in 1168. Charlemagne's remains, housed in an elaborate golden shrine, originally lay directly under the chandelier.
