Built by Abruzzo's 16th-century Spanish rulers, the castle sits at one end of L'Aquila's historic center. You can take a guided tour of the castle, and it's worth your time even if you end up taking an Italian-language tour. You'll see the castle from top to bottom and discover its ingenious defensive systems for yourself.
