Sermoneta Castle belonged to the Caetani family until 1499, when the Borgia Pope Alexander VI confiscated the Caetani estates.

Pope Alexander added considerably to Sermoneta Castle's fortifications, then gave it to his nephew, Rodrigo, who was the son of Alexander's infamous sister Lucrezia. In 1504, Pope Julius II took the estate away from Rodrigo and returned it to the Caetani family.
