Here you can see just how huge Castello Spagnolo really is. The moat, now an emerald green lawn, helped prevent sneak attacks.

Inside the lower levels of the castle, the stairways are wide and the stair treads are very, very short. This was deliberate; the castle's defenders kept horses inside the castle walls and could ride them up and down the lower staircases if necessary. Wooden ladders connected upper floors to each other. These ladders could be pulled up or set on fire if invaders breached one section of the castle.
