View of Grotto of Tiberius From Villa Ruins

By , About.com Guide

Emperor Tiberius built his triclinium, or dining room, so that he could entertain guests and show off his sculptures at the same time.

If you look carefully inside the grotto, you can see two separate interior caves. Far back inside the right-hand cave, Tiberius' guests would have seen the sculpture depicting Odysseus blinding Polyphemus as he slept. Just inside the entrance of the main, or front, cave stood a sculpture of Scylla, Odysseus and his companions. Smaller statuary groups stood to the right and left inside the main cave. Today a replica of one of the ancient statues stands atop the entrance to the main cave.
