View Toward Hillside From the Grotto of Tiberius

Tiberius was famous even during his own time for his elaborate entertainments and banquets. Here in his grotto / villa complex, Tiberius narrowly escaped death at one of his own parties. While guests were dining, part of the cave collapsed, killing some of Tiberius' visitors. Tiberius himself was saved when an official threw himself on top of the emperor.
