Disappearing Gun, North Head Historic Reserve

This eight-inch gun got its nickname because its recoil pushed the gun underground, where it could be safely reloaded.

The "disappearing" guns were made in 1886, and North Head originally had three of these weapons in place. Today, North Head's remaining gun is one of the last of its kind anywhere.
