Trifels Castle's claim to fame is that Richard I was imprisoned there. It's worth a visit whether or not you like English history. The castle has been lovingly restored and offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
Built some time before 1081, Trifels was one of the castles belonging to the Holy Roman Emperors. According to local lore, Trifels was Frederick Barbarossa's favorite castle.
Richard I (the Lionheart) was imprisoned in Trifels Castle by Holy Roman Emperor Henry VI in 1193. He was captured as he was returning from a crusade and was moved to Trifels Castle because it was such a secure stronghold. Richard was eventually ransomed and returned to England in 1194.
