Verdun / Fort Douaumont Photos
Take a Photo Tour of France's Verdun Battlefield Area

From Nancy Parode, About.com

The eleven-month battle of Verdun began on February 21, 1916. Over 300,000 soldiers died or went missing in the fighting. Visiting the Verdun battlefields, cemeteries and memorial is a sobering experience. When you see the cemetery, which contains the graves of 15,000 French soldiers, and then realize that the remains of 130,000 unidentified soldiers lie in the Douaumont Ossuary in front of you, the impact of the Battle of Verdun begins to hit home.
