Twitter Safety and Etiquette
  • Never give out personal information on Twitter. Ever. This includes your name, family members' names, residence and the dates of your vacation. Why invite burglars to your home?

  • Don't reply to direct messages if the sender is not known to you. Again, not everyone in cyberspace is a friend.

  • Use hashtags in your Tweets; doing so will get you more attention on Twitter, and will probably result in more answers to your questions.

  • Twitter can be great fun, but no one wants to read dozens of Tweets per day from anyone. Resist the urge to share all the details of your life.

  • Writing in all capital letters is equivalent to screaming in real life, just as it is in emails. Use all caps only if you are very angry. Otherwise, write to convey the emotions you actually feel.

  • Remember that people Tweet from many places and in many languages. Enjoy the chance to get to know people from around the world.

  • Finally, if you wouldn't say it to me in person, please don't say it to me in a Tweet.
