While getting to your destination might not be the most glamorous part of your trip, transportation is an important part of any vacation. You’ll spend a large percentage of your travel budget on getting to your destination and getting around once you’ve arrived. You’ll want to travel in comfort, if at all possible, and to use your travel time as wisely as possible.

Air travel, while fast, is usually an expensive option. The exception to this rule is the group of carriers known as “budget” or “no-frills” airlines. Budget airlines have changed the way people travel in Europe and in North America; often, if you book ahead, you can get from one city to another for the same price as a train or bus ticket.

Long-distance buses are a good travel option if you don’t want to drive. Bus travel is usually less expensive than air or train travel. Bus travel is also a good choice if your destination is far from an airport or train station. Before you book your trip, consider checking the safety record of the bus company you select.

Many travelers use rental cars for local travel. Others prefer to use public transportation, such as subways, buses and trains, or to take taxis from their hotel to nearby sights. Deciding whether to rent a car or use public transport is a very personal choice. You’ll need to take several factors into account, including parking, accessibility and your willingness to drive in unfamiliar territory.
