Safe Places to Stash Your Cash

By , About.com Guide

Keeping your money and travel documents safe should be a top priority when you travel. Nothing can ruin a trip faster than a close encounter with a pickpocket. Fortunately, there are several ways to keep your travel money and passport safe when you're on vacation. Here are some of my family's favorites.

1. Eagle Creek UnderCover Deluxe Security Belt

I use this money belt whenever I travel overseas or in big cities. It's big enough to hold three passports, a large wad of cash, and four or five credit and debit cards. (Tip: Pack loose-fitting clothing to camouflage the money belt bulge if you plan to carry more than one passport.) I like the soft backing on this pouch, especially during the hot, sticky summer months. Adjustable straps ensure a good fit. While no money belt is perfectly comfortable to wear, this one comes pretty close.

2. Baladeo Travel Money Belt

This money belt has credit card pockets and a front flap with a Velcro closure. If you like to organize your paper and plastic money, the Baladeo money belt could be a good choice for you.

3. Samsonite Triple Pocket Neck Pouch

My husband has used a neck pouch like this for years. It holds everything he needs – passport, credit cards and cash. He can wear it around his neck or loop the cord around his waist and wear the pouch inside his trouser waistband. In a pinch, he can carry several passports and credit cards, although the pouch then becomes quite bulky.

4. Airport-Friendly Money Belt

If you're only worried about protecting your cash, this belt could be a good choice. It won't set off metal detectors, and you can hide bills without wearing anything around your neck or midsection. This American-made belt comes in three colors and two different sizes. It's only 1 1/4 inches wide, though, so you'll need to find a different place to hide your passport and credit cards.

5. Zip-It Travel Security Sock

I just found out about these socks, which have a zippered pocket large enough to hold a passport. I haven't tested them yet, but plan to get a pair or two for my next trip. The socks come in two useful colors, black and tan. Unfortunately, the socks aren't available in men's extra-large sizes, which means my husband and son are out of luck.
