Christmas Markets

Christmas markets offer something for shoppers of every age. These festive holiday events, modeled after Germany's traditional Advent markets (Christkindlmarkts), feature not only exquisite ornaments and decorations but also holiday treats, such as lebkuchen and hot cider.

Christkindlmarkt Bethlehem, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, is perhaps the best-known Christmas market in the U.S. This huge Christmas market attracts visitors by the busload, so prepare for crowds. It's all worth it, though – you can enjoy the on-site entertainment or shop until you can't look at another ornament. Save time for Käthe Wohlfahrt's stand; this famous German Christmas shop sells authentic nutcrackers, incense smokers and glass and pewter ornaments.

Akron, Ohio's Chriskindl Market looks just like a real German Christmas market. Outdoor stalls, ice skating and German music will make you think you've been transported to the Old Country. Watch German artisans at work and feast on bratwurst, potato pancakes and stollen at the Hutzenstub.

On the west coast, America's Largest Christmas Bazaar at Portland, Oregon's Portland Expo Center is exactly what it claims to be. You can't go wrong with 1,000 booths. This is the ultimate Christmas shopping experience; you can find everything from Native American crafts to handmade holiday decorations.
