Accessibility Information
Colonial Williamsburg's Visitor Center, hotels and modern facilities are wheelchair accessible. In the Historic Area, accessibility varies from building to building. Many shops and homes have front steps and interior staircases that are impossible to ascend in a wheelchair without assistance. The walkways in the Historic Area, while flat, are covered with a finely-crushed gravelly material. These walkways can be somewhat problematic for wheelchair users. There's a lot to see on the streets of the Historic Area, especially for first-time visitors, but wheelchair users should bring a companion or plan their trip around these obstacles.
Visitors must also bear in mind that the Historic Area is meant to represent life in colonial America. With the exception of accessible restrooms, most facilities are neither wheelchair-friendly nor air conditioned. If you are visiting during the summer and heat and humidity present problems for you, consider carrying a paper fan and a bottle of water.
Colonial Williamsburg rents folding wheelchairs. The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation offers special materials, including headsets and photographic interpretations, for vision- and hearing-impaired visitors. As you plan your trip, consult the "Accessibility Details" list to find out which buildings are easiest to visit. Contact the Visitor Services Coordinator at (800) 246-2099 for more information.
