On the night of Paul Revere's famous ride, Robert Newman hung two lanterns in the church steeple to tell Revere that the British regulars were coming to Boston by sea. Revere and Samuel Dawes rode through the countryside to alert the Minute Men. The next day, April 19, 1775, British soldiers confronted the Minute Men in Lexington, and the American Revolution began.
While you're in Boston's North End, take some time to visit nearby Paul Revere House, where the silversmith, engraver and patriot lived with his family.
