In front of the Page Museum, you can walk around a large pool filled with water and asphalt. If you look closely, you'll see oily swirls floating toward the surface, reminders of the treacherous asphalt that trapped so many animals.

Today you can visit the La Brea Tar Pits and see the asphalt pools for yourself. Although the pools are called "tar pits," they're actually filled with asphalt.
