Popularly called the "sabertoothed tiger," smilodon fatalis is properly called the sabertoothed cat, because it is more closely related to bobcats than to tigers.

Smilodon fatalis, the sabertoothed cat, freely roamed the Rancho La Brea area. Judging from the number of smilodon skulls on display, the cats thrived here.
