Are you a Skype user? Former Skype user? Please tell us about your experiences using Skype to make telephone calls - what worked, what didn't and whether or not you've saved money with Skype. Share Your Tips

Skype is a great option

I use Skype when traveling internationally with an unlocked GSM phone for back-up in case I have no (or poor) WIFi connection. Also, you can download Skype to a mobile device and you do not need to carry around a laptop. Ross Tannebaum MD FACEP FAAEM Travel Medical Group LLC

Does Skype Work for You?

I use skype with an adapter named Rylwy. This allows me to transfer my landline and cellular line via skype for free. daniel

Happy

I have used Skype for 4 years. They have rather strange customer feedback rules (but this is probably because they also have around 250million customers). I have always had regular annoying call-dropout problems with Skype - ALWAYS ADSL modem issues - not Skype it-self. Still experimenting with 24hour ADSL IP lease time to see if that makes a difference. Regards to all, Jim

Skype is Wonderful

I use Skype in the USA and in Brazil. All you need is an internet connection. I save hundreds of dollars every year by using this wonderful internet telephone. It costs $0.01 cents a minute to call within or to the USA. To call to or within Brazil is only $0.05 a minute. In the USA I have Skype set up so I can use my land-line phone to place calls around the world as well as in the USA and don't have to have my computer turned on. Skype is cheap, provides good service and is the best thing to happen since the internet was created.

Wonderful

Love Skype. Quick, handy and we can see each other. Doesn't get any better. :) Also now discovered it for to phone phone calls. Cheaper than any long distance carrier out there.

skype does not work with Win 7

I have been trying for 2 months to get Skype to work with my shiny new Win 7. I can hear the people I call, but they cannot hear me, or it is very distorted. I have been into every nook & cranny of so-called Skype support, with no success. Skype must have the worst customer service of any company I have ever come across. No phone, no email, nothing. If anyone can suggest a way of contacting Skype, I would be very grateful. I obviously contacted Microsoft, who did not want to know. Anyone out there, Skype????????????????

Skype Fan, but dropped calls

Skype is great, saves money and time...but lately all calls drop after 5 to 25 minutes. The suggestions from Skype and DLink router folks haven't fixed it. The router is older standard, not N.I use Cisco's Network Magic platform to manage my wireless network.Anyone have any ideas on how to fix?

This grandmother loves Skype

Once a week my daughter and I Skype one another. Because of its video capabilities I am able to see my grandson who lives in another city regularly. He is 15 months old and they change so much from week to week. I get to see him walking, talking, and we play patty-cake together. Fun! Sometimes the image is pixelated making things a bit fussy, but I'm not complaining.

Skype is Awesome

I use Skype with a wireless USB phone so I don't have to be chained to my computer. I like the video calls when I am at the computer. I have used Skype for 5 years and never had a problem with it.

Use Frequently

I use Skype for my writing business. I do interviews via Skype and use a recording program (Pamela) so I have a record. When my daughter lived in Africa, she introduced me to Skype and it was wonderful being able to talk to her at no cost. I have had connection problems or dropped calls once in a while but it hasn't been serious.

works for me

Skype isnt perfect. Its free for computer to computer, but there are lots of ways to do that. As a phone you can use for cheap international calls, and you can take it with you (with your lap-top). You can get a phone number from them (essentially a land-line like number) so you dont have to give everyone your cell number. Calls can be forwarded to your cell if you want. There is also voicemail and voicemail translated into an email (or text message to your cell) which gets sent to you. Basically - its a way to drop a landline but not have to give everyone your cell number.

I don't use it as much as I should

Skype does work, and since it works via the Internet, there are no long distance charges associated with it. In other words, I can call California from my home in Italy for free! Kyle

Two Thumbs Way Up

Here's my story: we were paying an average of $75/month for one of those "$39.95/mo. All Inclusive" landline packages. The $39.95 figure was never accurate. There were always dozens of extra long-distance fees, universal fees, connectivity fees, 911 fees and taxes added. Our landline never, ever worked out in our favor. Enter Skype. For $30/year, I have unlimited calling to the US and Canada. International calls cost fractions of cents, as do text messages. It's dead simple to throw $10 at Skype via PayPal to cover the extras. For another $30/year, we bought a "real" phone number that rings through Skype. Doing the math, Skype costs roughly $70/year vs. our >$900/year landline. Of course, we do have to pay for wi-fi (Skype stinks on a low-speed connection), but we're doing that anyway. And we already had a cell phone, which you'd need to call 911 or the power company in the event of an outage. I unreservedly recommend Skype as an alternative to price-gouging landline carriers.

Use Headphones

I use Skype when I'm overseas to call my husband at home on our landline (there's no cell service at our place in the sticks). There was always an annoying echo for him -- until I started plugging headphones into the laptop I use to call him. Problem solved :-)
